Risk Management

Here, we set out arrangements for safeguarding the health, safety and welfare of everyone involved with Ardclinis Outdoor Adventure. Anne Bowen, sole proprietor, trading as Ardclinis Outdoor Adventure, accepts responsibility for providing programmes of outdoor activities that are, as far as reasonably practical, safe and without risks to health.

In the day to day running of the business, the person with responsibility for health and safety issues, the safety officer, is Anne Bowen.

Guests expect high standards of safety. In the nature of the outdoor activities which make up the majority of our work, there is an implied element of risk. We ensure this risk is reduced as far as possible, certainly below widely accepted levels and commensurate with our guests enjoying and benefiting from activities.

Over recent years, many initiatives have investigated and analysed the performance of adventurous programmes. Some investigations have shown the outdoor industry in a bad light, implying criticism that was not deserved when one considers the numbers of guests taking part nationally and the value offered by the many professionals working in the field. An industry standard work 'Safety Practices in Adventure Programming' puts it in perspective, "adventurous activities are much less injurious than playing football or driving a car".

That's not to say we can sit back and do nothing -

Of course prevention is better than cure. We continue to contribute to and benefit from analyses of outdoor activities by National Governing Bodies and other outdoor industry representatives.

We have an excellent safety record and believe that it is vital we maintain it.

Simply, we believe happy, satisfied customers are the essence of our organisation, Our first priority is the health and safety of all our guests.

Brief features of our own safety management plan are detailed below:

As a responsible outdoor activity provider we:
*
* * * Monitor the performance of all employees by means of senior staff accompanying and by written and verbal course evaluations completed by guests.
*
* * * Ensure staff are trained in first aid and that they understand the procedures in the event of an emergency.
*
* * * Supervise young or inexperienced staff on a regular and consistent daily basis
*
* * * Record staff details including qualifications.
*
* * * Encourage constructive advice and comments from staff.
*
* * * Read and distribute reviews of safe working practices.
*
* * * Record and analyse accidents / incidents / near misses.
*
* * * Record defects and potential hazards and rectify ASAP.
*
* * * Record results of investigations, where applicable, and distribute the information to staff.
*
* * * Carry out a risk assessment of each activity and each new site.
*
* * * Carry out safety inspections during activities.
*

Guests
We recognise that differences between guests mean that what is safe for one group, or category, is not necessarily safe for another. Although categorising of guests tends towards stereotyping which is to be avoided as far as possible, we feel this is a step towards improving safety because it aids clear communication of the skill level and personal qualities of individuals.

We ask that course organisers are clear and precise when describing the capabilities and needs of course participants. Information supplied will be treated in a sensitive and confidential manner.

Our Safety Policy
We maintain an up to date copy of our safety policy in house.

The policy is available for inspection by clients and potential clients.
