This is an introductory course. The main topic is
navigation of small craft in a coastal setting. Topics
include:
Chart familiarisation, use of a plotting
instrument, passage planning, pilotage, action in fog. |
No prerequisites.
Bring proof of ID, pencil, dividers and a
notepad. |
| VHF Radio Short Range
Certificate |
Demonstrate knowledge of the general
principles and basic features of the maritime mobile
service relevant to vessels NOT subject to a compulsory
fit under the SOLAS convention.
Demonstrate detailed working knowledge of Marine
VHF equipment, including DSC equipment.
Knowledge of operational procedures of the GMDSS
and detailed practical operation of GMDSS subsystems and
equipment.
Demonstrate understanding of operational
procedures and regulations for VHF radiotelephone
communications. |
Short range certificate (SRC)
administered by RYA.
+ Authority to operate provided you are 16 or over.
For users of Marine VHF equipment on non SOLAS
vessels i.e. under 300 GRT. |
You should be prepared to show knowledge
of the phonetic alphabet.
Bring proof of ID, passport photo (not polaroid)
and a notepad. |

Boat handling practice, including Mooring and
reversing.
Leaving and coming alongside.
Types of craft and engines.
Personal safety, insurance, crew considerations.
IRPCS, local byelaws, accepting a tow. |
The RYA Level 1 powerboat certificate.
This is an introductory level certificate, useful
as a record of achievement and as encouragement to
develop further skills. |
No prerequisites.
Bring proof of ID and a notepad.
Minimum age 8.
8 to 11 year olds will receive a Level 1
certificate which will be endorsed - The holder should
only use powered craft under the supervision of a
responsible adult on board the craft.
12 to 16 year olds will receive a Level 1
certificate which will be endorsed - The holder should
only use powered craft under the supervision of a
responsible adult. |
| Powerboat Level 2 |
Crew preparation and boat preparation,
safety equipment, lines and fenders, fuel tanks.
Launching and Recovery.
Boat handling, effects of current or tide,
propeller controls.
Coming alongside.
Mooring and Anchoring.
Man overboard drill.
Emergencies, towing / being towed, rough weather
preparation.
Types of craft and engines, maintenance checks.
Personal safety, insurance, crew considerations.
IRPCS, local byelaws, weather forecasts. |
The RYA Level 2 powerboat certificate.
This course provides the skills and background
knowledge needed by the competent powerboat driver and
is the basis of the ICC. |
No prerequisites.
This course may be preceded by Level 1.
Bring proof of ID and a notepad.
Minimum age 12.
12 to 16 year olds will receive a Level 1
certificate which will be endorsed - The holder should
only use powered craft under the supervision of a
responsible adult. |
| Powerboat Level 2 assessment
only |
The candidate for direct assessment should
complete the practical exercise described and
demonstrate relevant knowledge on a test paper.
The practical exercise involves manoeuvring a
suitable powerboat from a position alongside a jetty or
pontoon, mooring alongside from downwind / downtide,
turning using warps, MOB test, stop / start engine, high
speed turns, securing to a buoy, reversing, holding off
and turning the boat in its own length. |
The RYA Level 2 powerboat certificate.
The holder of this qualification has demonstrated
the skills and background knowledge needed by the
competent powerboat driver. |
Requirement: experience.
One full season's boating (or 4/5 part seasons).
Bring proof of ID, logbook and a notepad. |
| Safety Boat Course |
Preparation: safety equipment assistance
with race management, crew communication.
Boat handling techniques and manoeuvres:
positioning in respect of fleet, standing off another
craft, coming alongside underway, dinghy and windsurfer
rescue, towing, mark laying.
Theory and background: Rescue of other water
users, communication, VHF, first aid. |
RYA Safety Boat certificate.
This course provides the skills required when
acting as an escort craft, safety boat or coach boat for
a fleet of dinghies, windsurfers or canoes for racing or
training activities. |
You must hold the RYA level 2 certificate
before you start this course.
Minimum age 16.
It is strongly recommended that a member of the
rescue crew should hold a first aid certificate and have
relevant experience.
